pixiesfeature

zones and teams

put a pixie inside a zone to give it one corner of the canvas to work in, and bring in more pixies as the work grows.

A zone is a labelled frame you draw on the canvas. A pixie standing inside one works in that zone: it sees the zone's nodes, builds in the zone and leaves the rest of the canvas alone.

Zones turn one big canvas into several small jobs, each with its own pixie.

a pixie in a zone works in that zone.

give a pixie a zone

  1. Open the + menu on the dock and choose Zone, which adds a frame to the canvas. See notes, text and zones.
  2. Drag the pixie's sprite so its centre is inside the frame.

A node belongs to the smallest zone that contains its centre, and the same is true of a pixie. Nothing is stored about it: move the sprite out and the pixie is back on the whole canvas.

what changes inside a zone

  • It sees only the zone. The pixie's picture of the canvas lists the nodes inside its zone, plus the frames of the other zones so it knows they exist.
  • It builds inside the zone. Nodes it creates are placed in the zone. If it needs more room the frame grows just enough.
  • It can still look out. Reading a node, looking at a picture or listing the canvas by name works on the whole canvas. Ask it to look at something outside, and it can.
  • New pixies it brings in are born inside the zone too, and inherit the same scope.

Without zones the pixie sees the whole canvas, as before.

bring in more pixies

Pixies are single-purpose, so a new kind of work gets a new pixie. You can add one yourself: hover the pixie button on the dock and choose New pixie, or drag it onto the canvas.

A pixie can also bring in another. It gives the newcomer a short first memory describing its job, picks a name no one in your organisation has, and tells you who joined and why.

handing work to a pixie that already owns it

Some pixies own a thing, and work on that thing goes to them.

  • A process resident works the runs of its process. A pixie asked for a new run starts one, and the resident does it in the background; the process node badges when it is done. See runs.
  • A sandbox dev, modeler or designer lives in its node's workspace and works on that code, model or composition. You reach it from its node.
  • A postie schedules social posts and a keeper looks after a table. Each can hand work to the other pixies on the canvas and gets a report back. A general pixie can start a run of a process but doesn't hand work to other pixies itself.

limits & good to know

  • A zone is at least 300 by 200 and opens at 900 by 600.
  • Nodes sit at least 40 units inside the frame when a zone grows.
  • A pixie's sprite can hop anywhere on the canvas to show where it is working, even out of its zone; where it stands decides its scope.
