video editor
cut a film from the pictures, renders and sound already on your canvas, and export it as an mp4.
The Video editor is a node that holds a film: tracks of clips laid on a timeline. A clip doesn't copy its media, it points at a node on the same canvas, so when you re-render a 3D shot or regenerate a picture the film picks up the newest version.
add a video editor
Open the Add nodes, models & assets menu in the dock (the + button) and choose Video editor. The node shows the film once it has been exported, a strip of the edit with one row per track, and an Export button. Open the full editor with the expand button on the node's header, or double-click the film.
A new edit is 1920×1080 at 24 fps with two video tracks and one audio track.
what a clip can show
The Media panel on the left lists everything on the canvas a clip can show. Type in filter… to narrow it.
| Source | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| 3D model exports | each film or still export of a 3D model node; "not rendered yet" until it is |
| files | video, image and audio nodes |
| composer pictures | the PNG of an image composer |
| other cuts | the exported film of another video editor |
| model results | the newest finished generation of a model node |
| animations | an animation node, drawn live at the clip's time, sharp at any size |
| ixi links | a file in ixi storage |
| colour cards | Colour card in the ribbon adds a solid 2 s card to dip through or hold on |
A clip follows the newest render of what it points at. To freeze it, select the clip and click pin to this file (stop following new renders) in the Clip tab. Click pinned to one file — follow the newest render again to undo it.
build the timeline
Drag media from the bin onto a track, or click + on an item to add it at the end of the track. A higher track draws over a lower one, so a caption track goes on top. Audio goes on audio tracks only. Video track and Audio track in the ribbon add more.
- Move a clip by dragging it. It snaps to the playhead and to other clips' edges, and you can drag it up or down to another track of the same kind.
- Trim by dragging a clip's left or right edge.
- Split at the playhead with <kbd>S</kbd> or Split.
- Delete removes the selected clip. Ripple delete also closes the gap it leaves.
- Click the ruler to move the playhead. <kbd>Space</kbd> plays, <kbd>←</kbd> <kbd>→</kbd> step a frame, <kbd>⇧</kbd> <kbd>←</kbd> <kbd>→</kbd> a second, <kbd>Home</kbd> goes to the start.
- <kbd>⌘</kbd> <kbd>Z</kbd> undoes and <kbd>⇧</kbd> <kbd>⌘</kbd> <kbd>Z</kbd> redoes.
The eye and speaker buttons on a track header hide the track or mute its sound. A track can be removed only when it is empty.
shape a clip
Select a clip and use the Clip tab.
| Section | Controls |
|---|---|
| Timing | start · length · source in · speed (0.25× to 4×) |
| Picture | fit (cover, contain or fill) · scale · push-in · x · y · rotation · opacity · crop (left, top, right, bottom as fractions of the picture) |
| Transitions | in and out: cut, dissolve, dip to colour, wipe |
| Sound | volume (0 to 2) · fade in · fade out |
push-in is a slow zoom across the clip: 0.05 grows the picture by 5% from its first frame to its last.
transitions
Each clip has an in and an out transition, with a length in seconds.
- dissolve ramps opacity. Put the next shot on a higher track so it overlaps and you get a cross-dissolve.
- dip to colour passes the whole frame through a colour you pick.
- wipe reveals the clip behind a soft edge that travels along an angle, with a soft edge width. It is how handwriting gets "written on".
the film tab and the grade
The Film tab sets the frame and one look over the whole film.
- Frame presets: 1080p, 4K UHD, 720p, Square, Vertical, 4:5. Or type a width and height.
- frame rate: 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 or 60 fps.
- background colour and length. Leave length empty to end at the last clip.
- Grade: brightness, contrast, saturation and vignette sliders. reset clears them.
the soundtrack
Sound lives on audio tracks and on the video clips themselves. A video's own sound mixes in unless you mute the clip or the track. Give a music bed a low volume and a fade out, and a voice-over its own track. The mix is built into the exported film as AAC audio.
export
Click Export on the node or in the editor's header. The card shows progress, then the film plays on the node. The node's status reads Not exported, Exported or Changed since export. An edit, or a new render of anything a clip points at, makes the export stale. Nothing is re-exported on its own.
The film is the node's output. Wire it into other nodes, or use it as a clip in another video editor.
If a clip points at a node that was deleted, the header shows n missing and that clip draws nothing.
