jewellery
sweep wires and shanks, set stones, add bezels and prongs, then turn the piece into a casting with seats, a weight and printability checks.
Jewellery mode is Sculpt with a set of jewellery tools added. You shape metal by sweeping a profile along paths, set stones into it, and ask for a casting: one solid with a seat cut for every stone, weighed in the metal you choose.
Choose Mesh ▸ Jewellery ("Stones, settings, casting, metal weight") in the mode picker. The ribbon's Jewellery group holds Sweep, Gem, Bezel, Prongs, Scatter and Casting.
sweep
Sweep carries a profile along one or more paths: a shank, a wire, a rim, a tapering leaf. The profile is a circle, rect, roundrect, half, lens or custom section, with a width and height in mm. Each path point can carry its own scale, width, height and twist, so a band can taper. Choose end caps (round, flat, none) and a mirror axis: draw one quadrant of a symmetric piece and reflect it.
Paths are points in 3D, so in practice you describe the piece to the modeler pixie and adjust the numbers it leaves in Properties.
stones
Gem adds faceted stones. Pick a cut: round, oval, marquise, pear, baguette, princess, emerald, trillion, lozenge, kite, chevron or custom. Set length and width in mm and a list of placements; each placement can be scaled or mirrored, so one step can set a whole row of pavé.
The Middle Band wing cuff holds 167 stones in a dozen steps, grouped by size and by where they sit.
Bezel wraps a collet round each stone of a Gem step: wall 0.3, lip 0.1 and seat 0.08 mm by default. Prongs stands posts on the girdles of the stones: shared puts one post where several stones meet, corners puts one over each corner of a polygon stone. Defaults: Ø0.4 mm posts overlapping each girdle by 15%. Scatter copies a bead or petal along a path or surface.
what it is made of
Select a part, open Properties, and choose Material from the list: gold in 24k, 22k, 18k, 14k, 10k and 9k (yellow, white, rose), platinum 950, palladium 950 and silver 925 for metals; diamond, moissanite, cubic zirconia, ruby, sapphire, emerald, spinel, tsavorite, amethyst, topaz, aquamarine, tanzanite and peridot for gems. One choice sets how it looks and what it weighs. A stone without a material counts as diamond, and the report says so.
casting
Press Add casting in the Jewellery report (or the Casting tool). It takes the whole piece: every metal part is joined into one solid, a seat is cut for every stone, and prongs and bezels are added after the seats so they keep their metal. The casting is a production body, shown only in the Casting view; Design shows the uncut parts. Exports of the whole scene leave the casting out unless it is named.
The report, with nothing selected, then reads:
- Weight in grams, with a metal list to switch alloy. These are typical alloy densities; check them against your caster's chart.
- Volume in mm³, the count of seats, and whether it is one piece. More than one piece is a warning: a floating bit won't cast.
- Ring Ø in mm with the US and EU size, measured from the first radial sweep.
- Checks, each marked pass or not: Thinnest metal (0.4 mm), Narrowest gap (0.3 mm), Closest stones (0.15 mm), Metal round a seat (0.4 mm) and Culet to finger (0.5 mm).
Seats follow a production standard (clearance 0, 98% fit, a 0.6 mm light hole through the back, 1.5 mm of clearance above the girdle, 0.3 mm corner relief). Open-back holes narrower than the limit become a divot to drill after casting, and the report counts them. A shrink percentage scales the printed solid to allow for casting shrinkage. It defaults to 0, because casters often compensate themselves.
The Stones table lists each size with count, Each and Total carats. Carats come from the trade's length × width × depth estimate for the cut, times the gem's gravity. Stones off a 0.05 mm size grid are marked to order.
print and hand over
The casting's STL export is the print file. Wire it onward, or download it from Export. The stones are not in it; their seats are already cut.
limits & good to know
- Weight is reported only from a casting. Without one the report says No casting yet.
- A casting cuts what is cut, nothing else: tight spacing, thin walls and floating pieces show in the checks. Fix the design and the numbers update.
- Intersecting shells in one sweep are joined first, so crossing wires work.
